Posted - 20 July 2008 : 10:12:47 Hi, we will have a few hours to spare before our boat to Symi. Can anyone recommend a nice cafe/bar near the harbour(s)? We will have luggage with us so we don't want to have to venture far into the Old city. |

Posted - 25 July 2008 : 22:38:07 I agree thats its nice to 'find' places for yourself. I asked a lot of questions before my first visit to Symi and on others advice we tried Hariotemi's. We wouldn't have bothered going up there if it hadn't been recommended by some people on here. We would have missed out on the fantastic food and view. Enjoy your holiday! |

Good God, is this for real, asking for guidance to a cafe on Rhodes? Remember when all the world was pink, the sun never set on the Empire. Your grand-parents would be spinning in their graves. Where IS your sense of adventure?
Given the exact wording of the initial enquiry, I would have thought it was entirely appropriate to ask for guidance. I have a vague recollection this may be Teddy's first time.
Folks obviously do have a sense of adventure else they wouldn't be travelling in the first place, however I don't see anything wrong with asking others what/where they would recommend. There is good and even better anywhere but to be given advice about the better places is always a plus.
Wherever you find yourself Teddy, I hope you enjoy. Have a fabulous holiday .

Teddy, have a look at the Off Topic thread "Lets have a bit of fun". Thats what happens to folk who ask about Rhodes caffs. Don't finish up like Bill & Alma..
Come off it, OG!!
Insofar as I can claim to be a seasoned traveller, I would say that there are two good ways to find excellent places to eat etc.
One undoubtedly is to be adventurous and follow your own instincts - I have indeed discovered some very good places that way (though a basic rule of thumb is that if a bar or restaurant hasn't got many customers, there's probably a good reason!).
But it's always good to have a fallback list of places which other people have tried and found good. Before I go anywhere new I always look at the guidebooks and see which places are recommended, particularly the guidebooks in series like the Rough Guides which I know from experience to be reliable. (Even more useful would be recommendations "don't waste your time and money going there" - but the laws of libel make that a very risky approach! |

Posted - 24 July 2008 : 13:46:22 They were still using it as a fish market not so long ago. I only really get over to Rhodes in the winter months and have seen them unloading large swordfish from pickup trucks onto the slabs.

Enjoy |

It's straight ahead Bill. Well, it would be if there wasn't a huge bandstand thing in your way!
Walk round the 'bandstand' until you find the entrance to the newly renovated and rather fine public toilets. Indigo is directly opposite. |

Posted - 23 July 2008 : 19:38:37 At last we have found a decent Rhodes City map on the Web. The market, taxi rank, bus station and the assorted harbours are shown quite clearly.

Posted - 23 July 2008 : 14:36:56 Yes Bill.
Directly opposite Mandraki. You can enter from the front where all the 'comfy chairs' establishments are or there are doors at each side (one opposite the taxi rank) and one at the back. |

Having not spent too much time on Rhodes after the last dozen years or so, where is the new market please. Is it near all the establishments lined against the pavement on the front?
Thanks. |
