Posted - 08 October 2008 : 16:09:22 Poppet, just read your post.
I agree with you about the monastery in Amorgos. We've visited 3 times, we love Amorgos it is one of my favourite islands. The walking is very good. Did you walk the spine of the island? We did that walk, its a long walk but the views are fantastic. When we called in the monastery the monks gave us the drink of Raki and after the hot walk up it went straight to our heads!
You were lucky to see the dolphins. I've only seen them once that was near Iraklia whats near to Amorgos.

Posted - 30 September 2008 : 12:28:23 Dave - just reading the walks page -and noticed that you mentioned the Amorgus monastery walk - which we managed to do last year - now I am quite slow at walking having had lots of metal work inserted Knee / hip etc. but what a sense of achievement when I mangaged it and looked out at the views then to cap it all a school of dolfins out in the bay - one of the best moments of my life - you must try to do it! The priests are so welcoming and you get a drink as well as water and a piece of delight while you are resting and looking at the history of the monastery before you start the walk back down (there is a resting place in a cool shelter half way down). Another place on that lovely island is the walk down to the ship (also quite tough in parts) - which was filmed in the Big Blue (a French film)it is a lovely island which is like visiting two islands at the same time...lots of walks there as well and not so much on the tourist path...I do find the Symi walks hard as the rocks are so high for my little legs..its alright for my man as he is 6'2 but I am only 5'4. |

Posted - 01 April 2008 : 10:11:00 I am amazed at the resourcefulness of this wonderful chat page. I never knew you could arrange walks from the Poseiden. We are creatures of habit but as we are on Symi for 3 weeks this year we shall surely try a few different walks. |

Posted - 01 April 2008 : 07:05:52 Beverly,
Hugo's scheduled walks are in cooperation with Triton. The boat are used for the return journey from Ag. Emilianos or Ag. Vassilios. They also serve one of the best lunches you will have on the island. Hugo’s walks are advertised on the board where Triton docks in Yalos.
Poseidon, the other boat that does round the island trips, has a similar arrangement with another guide (Jytte) and they do different walks. Days and routes are advertised on Poseidon’s board.
Remember a good pair of shoes as the paths are rough at places.

Posted - 12 March 2008 : 11:12:53 Symiakos - could you mean the walk to St Vasilis? It is indeed a bit of a scramble down the rock pile to the shore but the swim at the end makes it all worthwhile. Plus of course the Triton BBQ to follow. |

Posted - 11 March 2008 : 18:41:44 I have taken walks with Hugo on Symi. One I remember more than any other is the walk from Yialo to Agia Marina. And though there's a comment by Adriana about walks around Symi not being much like those in Copenhagen, the Danes did appear to be more adept at traversing the narrow trails better than the Americanakia. Anyway, I did meet relatives along the way and I was rewarded, there was a boat along with crew which fed me and brought me back home. The climb down the steep cliff from Agia Marina to the shore is a bit treacherous.

Posted - 02 March 2008 : 18:35:56 The problem with Greece is that of a country so widespread - there is so much for Gail and I to see, so many walks for us to do ......... but so little time available. But I have to say that with all these walks mentioned ( and others we have done) the friendliness and hospitality is second to none ( and you only need basically "hello" in Greek to break the ice) . That really is the hidden (i.e., not in package holiday brochures) joy of Greece ! We're still trying to make Amorgos and the walk to "that" monastary ! maybe a year or two ! |

Posted - 28 February 2008 : 19:11:04 I'd heard about Loutro - I've met people who go there on a regular basis to stay with locals they've met there - possibly Pip & Netti who are now regulars on Symi. Apparently there is a path leading out of the place over the back of the cliffs. It sounds lovely and unspoilt. I'd be interested in doing some more walks on Crete, so I'll look out for the author you mention Anthony. I'd also like to scale Mount Ida, popping into the cave where Zeus was born on the way up! . |
