I’m now on Symi, for the next 3 weeks . This time I have my laptop with me, and staying at Taxiarchis it’s easy to connect to the internet, so I’ll try to keep you posted. I also of course have my camera, and have already been going round taking photos of what Chorio and Yialos look like out of season as well as many of the spring flowers, in glorious Technicolor as opposed to Adriana’s photographs which could only be reproduced in black & white in the March edition of the Symi visitor. Hopefully I’ll be able to post a selection on the internet, particularly the ‘out of season’ ones, perhaps some time next week. (Perhaps you should all be praying for stormy weather on Symi : the more it rains, the more likely I am to spend time sitting at my laptop selecting and editing photos – either in Taxiarchis or in some bar/cafe – instead of going out to explore Symi and take even more photos.
You will have seen Adriana’s pictures of Symi harbour on Sunday – that was when I was flying out! No problems with the London to Athens leg of the trip, though it was snowing in London on the way to Heathrow, and indeed the snow was beginning to settle (or ’stay’, or ‘stick’, depending which part of the country you come from: any other regional variations??). But Rhodes of course did share Symi’s storm, and its airport was closed for most of the day. Indeed, because of the Rhodes weather my onward flight from Athens, scheduled for 7.00pm, was almost 2 hours late taking off – and the man sitting next to me explained that he had been booked on the first flight of the day (around 04.15), which took off as scheduled but had to turn back when the storm hit Rhodes and the airport closed. He had spent the rest of the day in Athens airport waiting for Rhodes to reopen.
With that background I wasn’t optimistic about a ferry to Symi the next day – particularly as the only departure scheduled was the hydrofoil leaving at 14.00. Surely that would be cancelled, but at least there was the Proteus leaving late Tuesday evening. In fact Monday on Rhodes dawned almost windless – the sea was as flat as the proverbial millpond – and the temperature also rose quickly into the 20s. It felt more like May than March, and I was soon walking around in shirtsleeves, with my sleeves rolled up. Symi, by the time I got there, was if anything even hotter: I would have been delighted to have had such a hot day on Symi during the second half of May!
On Symi, after settling in at Taxiarchis, I went to see Yianni at the Rainbow to have my first Mythos [my spell check suggests that should be ‘Myths’ or ‘Mythic’!! ]. In the evening, just before dinner, I went round Chorio and Yialos to see which bars and restaurants were open. In Chorio all the bars (except of course Jean’s) were open, catering as they do primarily for a local clientele: by contrast in the centre of Chorio, Syllogos was the only restaurant open. I’d been told that Haritomeni opens at weekends (only) in winter, and indeed when I was down in Yialos I could see that its lights were on.
In the harbour between a third and a half of the bars were open – surprisingly not Pacho’s, though I learnt later that he was closed just for a few days for redecoration, and was indeed open again yesterday. There were very few restaurants apart from the local lads' kebab/souvlaki places: Aris, the Kantirimi ‘taverna’ (next to the Kantirimi bar, and really more kebab/souvlaki than taverna), and in the streets behind the town square a taverna called ‘International’ which I’d never really noticed before. I’d seen Dimitri earlier who assured me he was open – but perhaps only at lunchtime because he has certainly been closed the last couple of nights. I also saw Michael, from Kamares down in Pedi, inside Lefteris’ cafenion – and he told me they planned to open at the end of the month. I had previously decided that I would eat the first night at Syllogos, so I went back up there.
I’m typing this off-line and it’s now time for dinner , so it won’t get posted until tomorrow (Thursday). I’ll aim to continue, and bring the story up to date, within a day or so.

| Glad to hear you arrived safely and without too many delays. However warm during the day, I bet it's cold at night. Last time we visited for (Greek) Easter, in mid April, friends were fighting for a share of my down jacket once the sun went down. |

Hi Anthony...pleased to hear you had a relatively trouble free journey despite the weather .
Thank you so much for taking time out and remembering to tell us what Symi is like in March . All your indepth information has really given me a feel for it, I'm looking forward to further updates ...however I certainly wouldn't wish bad weather upon you in order to get them.
Lucky that Syllogos is open as the food there is very good but of course it would be ideal if you had somewhere else to eat during your stay.
Continue to enjoy your stay.....I'll be waiting (im)patiently to read your next update |
Yesterday is experience, tomorrow is hope... today is getting from one to the other. |

Wendy and I were admiring his extremely impressive camera yesterday when he popped into the office.
Now the sun's out you can expect some good photos! |

Fascinating Anthony, thank you for the update and glad to hear you have settled in. Three weeks, you lucky man! Please keep us updated on the blog side, as Maziemoo said, it almost feels as if I am there.
Really looking forward to seeing the pictures, will you take some of the locals too, or do you have to get them to sign a release form?!!! |

I've enjoyed reading your post, Anthony. It sounds lovely on Symi. I am really looking forward to seeing your flower photos! We've always wanted to visit Greece this time of year to see the spring flowers. Ange |
Experience suggests it doesn't matter so much how you got here, as what you do after you arrive. |

Does the Taxiarchis have wifi, Anthony?
I'm arriving next week and need to do a bit of work while I'm there, meaning Internet access is essential, so this would be ideal for me. |
