from the lovely symi...... stunning, simply stunning1!!! the food, the views, everything. I loved it. Best bits...the bar on the Kalastrata steps with views to die for..... the food at the furthest eatery at the end of the harbour.... never had lemon taties like it! the beaches....the water.....where do you stop..... Only slightly rubbishy this was some English guy in a England football top barking the rules about having to eat in his bar as we were sat on his loungers down at Pedi beach..... was quite shocked by this....he had a terrible attitude and was really quite rude. I certainly didnt go to a lovely traditional greek island to be barked at by someone who to be honest looked more suited to Blackpool or Magaluf! He should leave pronto, simply doesnt deserve to be there (Rant over).... not very nice.....apart from him.... the best holiday ever!!!!!

Hmmm, that would be Paul doing the barking lol. Actually, until last year you had to pay for the sunbeds which is normal. Since then they are free for patrons of the cafe bar. Basically you should order something, even a drink to take advantage of them.

I'm pleased you liked Symi though. You will understand why so many of us go back year after year.

Who loves ya baby!

well, thats what we thought...you simply pay for the longers..... but soon found out that this was not how he did it...... needless to say his loungers where always nearly empty. Not a nice man at all. I totally see why peopel go back to the Island tho....we missed our ferry due to delayed flight and where put in Falaraki for the night..... I think you can guess what i thought of that place! nothing polite enough to paste on here anyhoo......

Oh Vickie2008, so glad you had a lovely time and as Kojak says, you can now understand why people go back year after year.

My friends think I'm potty (no comments please!) to keep going back, September will be my fifth time and my Mother jokes that I want to rest my bones there! I hope to be there a bit sooner than that!

Also returned Weds after our third visit to the island and yes we still have the bug. Sorry to hear that someone had a bad experience on Pedi Beach in regard to the use of the sun beds. On our first visit to the island there was no sand on that part of the beach, shabby sunbeds that you had to pay for and the gravel in situ smelt like a cat litter tray. Not only has this bar owner and his wife greatly improved the area of that part of the beach,we have used his facilities many times and found him and his wife to be warm friendly and welcoming to the point where we spent an evening at the beach enjoying ther hospitality. Dont let one experience put you off they are a really lovely family.

Paul was going to appear in my soon to be posted review. Not impressed I'm afraid. Probably won't slur him any more now.

The tourist "pie" is only so big & the tourist euro can only go so far. Operators only have about 6 months (at the most) to make a quid & are therefore very jealous & opportunistic.
For some time I have been convinced that the island as too many bars & eateries. I imagine they need Town Hall permission so its probably up to them to control the situation.
Don't get me wrong, everyone has the right to make a living, its just that there should be some restraint.

Lemon spuds: Muppet, try par boiling them..
Cheers

Dont know what recipe you use muppet but a lovely Greek lady on Halki gave me this instruction:

Place wedges of potatoe into a baking dish, cover with hot water, half a cup of olive oil and sprinkle oregano on the top. I usually add some black pepper and salt. Bake for about 45 minutes to an hour.

10 minutes before serving add half a cup of lemon juice, Apparently if you add it too soon it ruins the taste.

I've done it many times and been pleased with the results.

Hi Maziemoo,

My skills in the kitchen are ledgendary

I tried them but they were like boiled potatoes

When you say cover with hot water .. do you mean cover or just some water I virtually covered them and after an hour there was still loads of water/oil left.

Do you perhaps use just a little water and the olive oil and cover them with foil for a while. Then add the lemon juice 10 mins from the end.
I must get these right .. they were so lovely on Symi. I can't go a year without tasting them again.

Must just be my deft touch !!
I assume just 1 layer of potatoes in a baking dish?
What temperature did you bake them at?
Was it fresh or dried oregano you used?
I will master them.

Mind you ... if I think I am having trouble with the tatties ... we are also trying to learn a little Greek for our next visit. Now that it proving fun

Hi Muppet

I usually 'almost' cover them and then you get little brown edges to the bits poking out of the top of the water. You can however put a little less water in if you prefer browner potatoes....it's really a matter of preferrence/taste.

They do tend to come out with an texture like boiled potates but with more flavour. I suspect the type of potatoes you use may make a difference too....I used some the other week that seemed very powdery so they tended to break up.

The lady that gave me the receipe used dried oregano but I wouldn't think it matters too much which you use....again a matter of preference.

Joanie darling, although I was pre-occupied rubbing shoulders with certain Formula One racing driver (I use that term lightly), it was nice to hear from you!
