Hi All,
We just got back from another visit to Symi on Wednesday night following two weeks so it looks like we missed the rain, shame! . We had two cracking weeks with the weather in our first week hitting the 40's on some days and in the 30's the second week. Pacho's bar in the harbour once again was faultless, the friendliness exteneded to us and the well priced drinks were superb. On the meals front the Italians (Bella Napoli), Neraida (behind main square), and the resteurant in Harani situated just before you turn to Nos beach were all excellent. In Pedi, the little taverna on the beach to the left when you get off the bus was also very good and they don't charge for the sunbeds either!

On a negative side though the prices in some places which shall remain nameless were excessive and seemed to be made up as they go along! which did dissapoint us. The friendlineess of some of the locals in some establiments did also at times leave something to be desired I'm afraid so say. This has made us think whether we want to return next year but I'm sure we probably will!

For our stay we stopped at Margaritia's apartments situated just above Nos beach. The welcome we got there, the condition and cleanliness of the apartment and most of all the view over the sea was excellant. Highly recommended.

Hi Colin. Glad you had a good time on Symi despite being somewhat underwhelmed by your reception in some establishments (and wouldn't we like to know which ones )

Haven't posted much recently but I was struck by what a good idea your 'mini review' was and thought it worth a response (Oops! that sounds as if other posts aren't...not what I meant at all )

Anyway, I really like the idea of 'returnees' posting a short review of their favourite and not so favourite haunts. I know most folks already have their 'special' places but things can change from one season to the next and it's good to know in advance if things have changed.

We are heading out on 1st October for 2 weeks and, whilst I've no intention of spending valuable time making detailed notes on every place we go, I will let you know if we've been extra pleased (or disappointed) with anything in particular. Does anyone else fancy doing the same??

I think, Colin, you've been very sensible in not 'naming names' as we've seen from previous threads how things can get quite nasty but a little hint wouldn't hurt...would it????

Hello Sis! Good to see you out there. Thanks for your invite to your soiree - I'm only sorry we couldn't stay longer but we had a wedding anniversary to celebrate - the Symi social calendar does get crowded sometimes! If you pvt. message me your email address I've got a couple of pics of you and Wee Jimmy!

Who loves ya baby!

Good to be home in the rain and hail!! Mind you, there was enough rain on Symi to keep me going throughout the Winter.

Glad you had a good time Colin but as Sue says it would be good to know which places to avoid.I'm glad that you enjoyed your accomodation though it makes all the difference.

Thanks darling! Have just turned the heating on, resisted for a few days.

As a creature of old habits, I tend to stick to the same places, Haritomeni, Mythos, Muses, Thollos (sp), Georgios etc.

Joanie, me naming names would really put the cat among the pidgeons. You know how some people on here can be a little defensive!! but then again maybe it would be fun!

With the visit to Symi not confined to the memory bank maybe on one of these long dark cold nights I might just name those to avoid so as to see the reaction

Interesting debate . . . I think it better not to name names for the reasons mentioned above. It would also be a bad reflection on S.V. Word of mouth, e-mails & Personal Messages are the best way to share this information. We should share our experiences of Symi otherwise the forum would be pointless, but always use a degree of discretion where negative comments cannot be avoided. I'd be interested in a moderator's point of view on this one.

Perhaps if we focus on ALL the really good places and give those their deserved praise then those not mentioned on the site will be those less well regarded .

Packing today, travelling to airport tomorrow, flying out first thing Wednesday for two weeks staying up in Chorio this time. This is the latest time we have ever visited .

We are always to read that some venues on Symi are seen as expensive. We were out in June and nothing compared to rip-off Britain. So often we are welcomed to a taverna or restaurant on Symi with a complimentary beer or ouzo; the friendliness of owners and staff is exemplary; and the quality of food is sublime.

We always recall a few years back getting off a late ferry and having to go to the accommodation immediately and getting to one of our favourite restaurants as they were closing. They saw us, put the lights back on, started up the stove and made us a wonderful dinner. At the end of the holiday arriving back in the UK and getting to our stay-over accommodation just off the airport we arrived at 10:01 pm only to be told the kitchen closed at 10:00

Hi D&E - we too are flying Wednesday - but we are going to Karpathos for one week and then to Symi for a week, so I hope the restaurants stay open, I did come out in November a couple of years ago for a wedding but this time we are coming out for a real break (we are recreating our honeymoon of 24 years ago as it is our 25th next June and we will be in Italy)...any excuse to come to Symi really...have packed already, and finishing work tomorrow lunchtime then hopefully sunshine most of the way and as you say leaving this rip off country, where everything is costing much, much more and the surliness of staff beggers belief not only in restaurants but shops and the utilities people...the stories I could tell you that have happened to us this last few weeks...

This particular moderator would agree with you Kyriako.

"Naming names" simply to put the cat among the pigeons or for fun would probably be frowned upon. Ultimately fairly pointless too I suspect.

For every post we have had here complaining about a particular establishment there have been as many praising the same place. The recent posts about Julie's Bar in Pedi are typical examples. It's all down to personal taste.

As has been said so many times it is difficult to have a bad meal on Symi but any taverna can have an off day. The same goes for the staff, I'd certainly find it difficult to maintain a happy smiling customer service manner after working twelve hours or more a day, seven days a week for six solid months!

I agree with the points made by Kyriako and Allan.

For my part, there are still lots of places I've heard about but just haven't got around to visiting yet....there's only so much eating and drinking one can do on holiday .

My personal favourites so far are ......no I'm not going to say but I expect other venues to be added to my list the more I return to the island.

As for the place mentioned by Colin that "seemed to make the prices up as they went along", I believe I experienced the same thing in one such establishment...suffice to say, I only went in there the once...however they appeared more expensive than anywhere else, including down in the harbour, maybe that explains why the bar concerned was so quiet.

Two places I would like to mention though....the Sunrise Bar which came out on top for me this visit, Kevin and Claudia make wonderful hosts and the place has a certain unique atmosphere about it. And as ever Pachos , great for people watching and with ouzo at 1.5 euros...very reasonable indeed.

The degree to which I enjoy any place often depends on the mood I'm in at the time (not that of the owner/staff) and of course whether I'm in the company of friends be they old or new. Which reminds me, it was lovely to meet so many of you this time .

Finally, I do hope you'll consider giving Symi another try Colin. I've just come back from my 6th visit in two and a half years and I can honestly say that every stay has been different but my overall experience is that for the most part people and by that I mean locals and visitors are usually very friendly and welcoming.

Yesterday is experience, tomorrow is hope... today is getting from one to the other.
