| Being a bit of a "woose" (is that how you spell it?). We were in Symi for the 1st time last year and came across a flattened Symi spider in the road up in Chorio - even dead it made me shudder. I only heard about the existence of the native beast on our return. However, we are returning later this month and I have been in denial until this thread started up. Let's talk about the beaches, cats and dogs - anything but this horrible, fierce, nightmare provoking ceature. Worse than a woose -I know!!! |

Hi Vickie2008...welcome to the mad house !
I'd recommend locating the mop when you arrive at your department. That way if you should come across a house guest during your stay , you can dangle it over the spider, who with luck will mistake it for a mate and hang on for grim death whilst you have the chance to hurl it out of the nearest window ....just make sure there's not some poor unsuspecting soul passing below/past the window at the time though . |

| Sound advice but nobody has told the spiders about it yet. |

And then there's Dulcie who hangs out in the Symi Visitor office... |

Oh Lynne, you really don't know what you've let yourself in for. Richard has a gallery of the beasts and he's just waiting for the excuse to display them yet again. You'll wake up screaming in the night! |

Don't worry Vicki, just have a cat around. My cats eat them as snacks, really crunchy when it comes to the legs . When I see one in my bed I just need to put a cat there too, and its gone |
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping in a closed room with a mosquito |

I came across one in the ladies of a reputable establishment a couple of years ago and thought it was a toy some child had left behind. Until it moved!!
It was the size of my hand, never seen anything like it before in my life!! |

The English fear of spiders saved Robert the Bruce from the Redcoats Hence the Scots tradition of not molesting the beautiful creatures I would far rather have spiders than mosquitoes. So please leave the little guys alone to fulfill their purpose. |

| Yes indeed, leave them alone, they eat flies (which are always a damned nuisance) or, in the case of the Symi Spider, the occasional goat. |

Sorry guys but whether they eat flies or not, I refuse to let something that size share my accommodation/bed ....I wouldn't kill them , but I'm not going to snuggle up to one at night either ! |

| Some of my resident arachnids are now so fat they are shedding their suits. |

The one I found on my pillow when I got woken up by a thunderstorm on Symi 3 Thursdays back wasn't that big by Symi Spider standards - the body was only about the size of a 2 euro coin, plus the legs of course. I suppose it was afraid of thunder and needed company, because it was the first time I'd ever known a Symi Spider come that close to a human - normally they scuttle off if they see you. Arachnophiles will be horrified, but I picked the pillow up and shook it out of the window till the spider dropped off into the rain. Maybe it has found a new home with Adriana. |
