Hi, we will have a few hours to spare before our boat to Symi. Can anyone recommend a nice cafe/bar near the harbour(s)? We will have luggage with us so we don't want to have to venture far into the Old city.

| There is a cafe/taverna right where the ferry docks on the harbour. Luggage may be left there even if you wish to amble around the City. There is an ANES ticket kiosk next door to the cafe and loos. Lots of visitors and reps around who keep an eye on the bags. Very convenient. |

| If you will go with the Aegly (hydrofoil) from Mandraki there are a traditional kafenion just inside the gate to the "New market" and the Indigo by the old raised fish market stand (now public toilets in the basement) are good and friendly for a light meal (and dinner in the evening) |

I agree with Ola about Indigo. It's on the left hand side of the market as you enter from the front and there is room to put your cases in front of the tables.
It's only a few minutes walk from Mandraki where both the Aegli and the Symi 2 dock.
The food is very good, slightly unusual and nicely presented. I can recommend the mixed plate for two...

As Richard said, there is a cafe at the commercial harbour. It's fairly basic and often crowded but very handy for the Proteus. If you're on the Dodecanese boats you may be able to leave your bags on board while you walk round to the cafe in the commercial harbour or up into the old town.
Enjoy your holiday! |

| I like the Indigo as well. It is a favourite with the reps but is still rather good. Where did you find that meal, Allan? I rarely take solids at that time of day but they do sell Mythos. |

Teddy, have a look at the Off Topic thread "Lets have a bit of fun". Thats what happens to folk who ask about Rhodes caffs. Don't finish up like Bill & Alma.. |

Thank you everyone for responding to my message, great comments received. It sounds like Bill & Alma had a lot of fun on Rhodes, thank you Ozzie Geoff!
I have been browsing through trip advisor and the Marco Polo Cafe in Rhodes old town has been highly recommended. Is it far from the harbour area? Could I get a taxi directly there from the Airport and then walk to the harbour with our luggage? |

Taxis can get into the old town but they don't like doing that and dragging heavy luggage around the steep, crowded cobbled streets won't be much fun. The best thing would be to get the taxi to take you to the harbour and leave your luggage there. If you're travelling on Wednesday, the most popular changeover day for UK visitors, and intend catching the Dodecanese boat do as Richard recommends and leave your luggage with the reps in the commercial harbour which is only a short walk to Colona where the ferry leaves from.
Reps find luggage guarding thirsty work so a small drink wouldn't go amiss!
The old town is a short walk from the commercial harbour.
If you intend travelling on the Aegli hydrofoil or Symi 2 ferry, both from Mandraki harbour, you are better sticking to somewhere close by like the Indigo taverna since you'll be unlikely to be able to leave your luggage anywhere.
Do you know yet which ferry you will be catching and how much time you expect to have spare?

Does anyone know what happened to the arrangements for leaving luggage at the Hermes? In June, with Olympic, we were expecting to leave the bags there but were told to put them at the bandstand at Mandraki where the reps had to stay on guard.I usually just drop bag off at the Hermes, have a spot of brekkie or drink ( depending on time of day)then wander off and pick bag up at ferry/airport time and was planning on doing the same when arriving independantly in September. PS a tad depressed at this moment in time as best mate and partner are off to Symi tomorrow and I'm jealous as hell |

| I think both arrangements are OK. It probably depends upon the reps. Two years ago we had to leave then in the bandstand but last year we just left them in the Cafe on the way out and the Hermes on the way home. |

I dumped my bag at the bandstand, bought an orange drink from the nearby vendor & asked him to keep an eye on it..

Having not spent too much time on Rhodes after the last dozen years or so, where is the new market please. Is it near all the establishments lined against the pavement on the front?
Thanks. |

Yes Bill.
Directly opposite Mandraki. You can enter from the front where all the 'comfy chairs' establishments are or there are doors at each side (one opposite the taxi rank) and one at the back. |

thanks... so if we go in via the right side before the comfy chair eateries, is it to the right?
Thanks... |

At last we have found a decent Rhodes City map on the Web. The market, taxi rank, bus station and the assorted harbours are shown quite clearly.
