Isn't a quote from To Kill a Mocking bird by Harper Lee, published the first time in 1960...

I would assume it was said by Atticus Finch, but am happy to be corrected.

Yes, it was indeed said by Atticus Finch (Greg. Peck).
If you haven't seen he film, hire it, its well worth it.
The author, as Mille said, is accredited to Harper Lee, but there are suspicions that the author was her friend, Truman Capote.
