We have fresh stocks of Lance Chilton's popular walking guide, Walks in Symi available at the Symi Visitor Accommodation office. This includes a good accurate walking map of the island.

Adriana,

1: Is this a new and edited edition of the book?

2: Is this a new map, or the same half good one that followed the books first edition?

It is the 2005 edition of the book, with a colour photograph on the cover. The map is still the 1999 one but as all that has changed is that the road to Panormitis is surfaced (sort of) all the way and there is now a dirt road down to Toli Bay instead of a foot path and likewise up to Kokkimides, this is not too drastic. It is still considerably more up to date than most of the other maps for sale here which are based on old Italian surveys or, even more dangerous, show proposed roads that have never been built such as the proposed ring road connecting Chorio with Nimborio and the back of Yialos. Lance personally surveyed Symi and walked every route he shows on the map so it is not based on hearsay.

How does the map compare with the SKAI map? Elaine & I used this and found it to be pretty much up to OS standard.

I haven't seen the SKAI map - we bought the only one for sale at the newsstand and it shows the non existent ring road!

SKAI 341 is the one we got - does this have non-existant roads? If so, I'll get in touch with them.

(lousy photo done on table - sorry for poor quality)

Well, it doesn't show the mythical ring road but on such a small sample area I wouldn't be able to tell you how accurate it is for other things such as, for example, the path to Old Drakos.

Being picky, the sample map shows the path from Ag Fanourios starting near the cemetery at Elikoni rather than from the bottom of the concrete slope near the Grace hotel. That wouldn't be a problem if you were coming down, but would be singularly unhelpful going up (you'd be on the wrong side of the ravine, for starters).

That said, the map looks miles better than the majority. I must dig out ny Chilton and compare.

I have ordered a SKAI map for use in May next year. (Booked for three weeks) After years of the excuses for maps sold in the kiosks and the Lance Chilton "sort of" map I'm glad someone have made an effort to produce a better map of Symi.

With a glance on the SKAY map I detect a lack of two much used paths and the mistake pointed out by Jan above. I am not impressed at this first glance Snapperjon, sorry to say so. Then again I'm not too impressed with Lance Chiltons book at all times either, especially about the lack of updates after the last years bulldozer-mania that have altered and destroyed some of the paths so may be I'm just too picky about details.

Speaking of details - I must congratulate Symi on their new stadium shown on the SKAY map at the back of Yalos, unless this is the basketball course that has been there for years...

The best map I have seen is the U.S Naval Map, First edition 1950 , revised '67. H.O. 4303. A copy of which used to hang on the wall in the ANES office. Another is hidden in Hugo Tyler's drawers. The map must have been for sale outside the Navy /NATO as it has printed "Price $ 2". I have sought after a copy for years but has been unable to obtain one. If anyone know of such a map I'll be willing to pay more than the printed price...

Yes Adriana, I actually had plans of a new guide book for Symi. Building on the best of various old ones and adding updated descriptions and pictures of views, interesting places and difficult passages. I never got Hugo interested in co editing though so the project will have to rest in a drawer on Symi until I am able to spend my time on what I like to do rather than what my employer feels ought to be done. So may be one time - Ins Allah...

Hmm. The identification of the churches is a bit erratic. If you were a newcomer and told to meet someone at Agios Elfeterios in Chorio or Lemonitissa, both of which are landmark churches, you wouldn't be able to find either of these on the map, yet the tiny chapel dedicated to Agia Eudocia gets huge billing - and is in the wrong place!

As Lance's map is for walkers exploring the island as a whole and is accompanied by a guide book detailing the various walks (the two come together in a plastic sleeve to slip into a pocket or day pack) extra information that there isn't space for on the map is provided in the book. All the churches outside the town are correctly identified on the map and landmarks are described in the various routes. It is not a detailed map of the town as such as it is not intended to be but it does identify the crucial bits.

It has to be better than this map (Orama) so far as the roads are concerned!!

(Sorry I could only paste this tiny picture - I can no longer find a way of putting in am Image Shack link at its proper size]

I bought that map (I think) at Athens airport on the way home after my last trip. It does claim to be "GPS Compatible", with a latitude/longitude grid. The contour lines are impressive too - whether they bear any more relation to reality than do the roads, I shall find out on my next visit.
