No flights direct from Copenhagen to Rhodos in that time of year.
Going via Athens.. Nah.. It'll take too much time. |
Don't argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. |

That was one of the difficulties I had with going in February....I was prepared to do that but when I thought I could be further disadvanted by lack or ferries or bad weather, it all became too much of a challenge!

Athens airport isn't too bad - if nothing else, the shopping's good!
And there's a museum of all the antiquities they dug up while building the airport
That immediately gives a trip to Symi educational status... |

| The Athens flight did quite appeal because I'd thought of taking some time out to go see the Acropolis......something I've never done yet and I've heard that the old part of Athens is lovely. |

I will explain. We were on Andros on holiday and had the option of going back to Athens a couple of days early to see the sights. We were put up in a very old 60s style hotel which was like a sweat box on the busiest road in Athens (three lanes each way and no car was going below about 80 miles an hour). The beach was across the road, but you took your life in your hands trying to cross the road. I braved it and was lying on the beach, which was very empty. I was lying sunbathing when this guy came up to me and said can I touch your b*****s. By this time I was really panicking as there was no-one else around. It was very surreal as he was very polite and thankfully went away when I refused (I was much slimmer and younger then, he would run a mile now ). Have to admit I was pretty scared. The jumbo jets taking off from the airport missed the top of the hotel by a mere inch or two!! We were told we could get a taxi into the area where the restaurants, shops, etc. were, but after nearly getting killed again crossing the road only one taxi stopped and when the driver realised we weren't Greek he drove off. We decided to walk along the road to see if we could find somewhere to eat and stumbled across some prostitutes, and we presume their pimp. He was talking on a walkie talkie and bundled them into a transit van We hot tailed it out of there quick smart. Can't remember now if we ever did get a meal that night, but I remember saying to Findlay how could we have left lovely Andros to come to this. However, things did improve as the tour the next day was excellent and worth the discomfort of the hotel, etc., and we did find a nice restaurant that night for dinner!! That was our brief experience of Athens which I can't say was the most enjoyable experience of my life, but seeing the Acropolis, the Olympic stadium which staged the first Olympics in 1896, etc. was well worth it. Hope I haven't put you off Athens Maziemoo!!!!! |

Mazie you will love Athens i know i did last year ,we stayed down at the Plaka at the Hotel Electra palace. When i woke up i would go to my balcony and above me was the Acropolis all lit up This is the view we had every night at the pool upstairs bar. I think you will love the shoping i know my wife did I will spend more time next time i'm over to see more of the ancient sites which facsinate me and i think the new museum will be open next year too so its definetly worth the visit, Like all big cities practice caution in non touristy places .Enjoy it Mazie you will love it. |

There's a bloke that hangs out on the corner of Amelias St. Just near Syntagma. This is how it works: "Excuse me, do you have the time" Looking at watch "Its ten o'clock" "Oh, are you from Melbourne?" (recognising the Oz accent)* "No, I am from Sydney..." " I have a brother in Sydney, look I like to talk about Australia. Have you some time, I have a bar very close...please, come, you can have a drink...."
*It could be from anywhere...eg "Oh you are from London?' "No, I am from Manchester".....the brother then gets wheeled out.
It took me about a heartbeat to twig but I went along with it. Sure enough the bar was very close by, very dimly lit with a few girls perched on bar stools, each alone, not in a group. I was introduced to "Anna" & then my new found friend disappeared, no doubt off to find another punter!! I declined Annas kind invitation to buy her a drink... |

Sounds like you had quite an errr....adventure MrsMcS !
Based on yours and Kon's descriptions and on the beautiful photograph that you posted for me Kon (thank you), I have no doubt that I should visit the Acropolis at some point . It's a strange experience, but every time I look at pictures of the Parthenon, I get a sense of having some previous attachment. |

| I am pleased to see that the webcam promises live coverage of the Ochi Day parade today. What time is it due or have I already missed it? |

Alas you have already missed it. It was shorter than usual for some reason this year. |

| What a shame. Must have been because the webcam is still on Daylight Saving Time! |
