But Kon, you are teetotal...
Those walks are not for the faint hearted, I have seen the flotsom & jetsom of the walks. Not a pretty sight, I can tell you..
BUT, nobody puts a gun to your head to drink the foul brews & finish up in bed for a couple of days thru exhaustion coupled with alcoholic poisoning...
Having said that, the walks are most enlightening & Hugo is an excellent guide & raconteur...

If this message causes confusion, my work here is done.

when I am able to get to Symi it is always my promise to Panormitis Monastery to take the walk to the monastery. It is a must do walk for those who can. The scenery is amazing and when walking with my father the shepherds he sees and knows along the way always open their homes for you.

When I was living afloat in Panormitis, when the motor road was still just a track and long before the bus was able to make the trip, I used to walk across to Yialos once a week to do my shopping and it took me about three and a half hours each way. That was making use of every short cut there was! Some of the old paths are now very difficult to find as they have been obscured by road works but there was quite a handy scramble down from the motor road to a foot path that joined up with the kataraktis and knocked literally miles off the journey, eliminating all the hair pin bends.

Of course I was a lot younger and fitter then

I love to walk, but I dont think walking on Symi is like walking in Copenhagen
We do not have many hills here

Don't argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

If The Lord had intended us to walk he wouldn't have invented Henry Ford!

It does take the better part of the day Kon, but we usually start off before daybreak get's too hot. Usually ssee a great sunrise up the mountain. The scenery and lighting a candle at he various monasteries along the way is beautiful. I always think about who has walked these paths previously to me.

I'd intended to walk to Panormitis when I was in Symi, but never managed to get up early enough to do it. Besides, it's more fun going on Yianni's boat as there's music & ouzo to boot!

Has anyone walked The Samaria Gorge on Crete? I've done it twice - a great experience. Once you get to Aghia Roumeli at the bottom, the only way out is by boat to Chora Sfakion . . . otherwise you have to walk back up to the top! There is a breed of goat that is unique to Crete called The Krikri - I managed to spot a few on the precipices.

Yes, I've walked the Samaria gorge many times - and there are several other walkable but generally unfrequented gorges along that stretch of coast, and I've walked many of them too. For more, see Loraine Wilson's "Crete - the White Mountains", published by Cicerone Press. She leads walks in that area - though fewer as the holiday companies seem to find it more and more difficult to sell strenuous holidays on Crete. I went on a marvellous one years ago where we took in several big summits and major gorges, bivouacking in the open for much of the time. Not the sort of thing you could attempt without her local knowledge!

For years when I went there on my own I stayed at Loutro - the little village/resort with no road access where the ferry calls in on its way between Agia Roumeli and Chora Sfakion, where the hordes of gorge-walking tourists are reunited with their coaches to be taken back to their hotels. Loutro is a calm and peaceful spot - except, I gather, in high season - though I don't go there so much nowadays as I can't dash up the mountains in the way I used to when younger!

Have walked the Samaria Gorge several times and it is wonderful. The gorge at Kato Zakros on the eastern side of Crete is worth a look as well. Crete is just a fantastic place-so much to see..

Adriana, we have walked on the path you mention. We did one of Lance Chilterns walks in reverse, starting at Nanou beach and up to the Monastry what overlooks Panamortitis. We was walking back on the road and saw the old kataraktis below the road. It ran past an old church. We joined it and it took us to the Roukonoutis (spelling?) I think it was (the Monastry what is supposed to be built on top of an older church) and then rejoined the kataraktis back into Yialos. We were glad we did, we were tired and it did literally save us miles than if we'd stayed on the road.

I'd love to walk the Samaria Gorge. We did visit in the late 80's but when we got to the start of the walk it was shut, I think you have to set off fairly early.

Experience suggests it doesn't matter so much how you got here, as what you do after you arrive.

I'd heard about Loutro - I've met people who go there on a regular basis to stay with locals they've met there - possibly Pip & Netti who are now regulars on Symi. Apparently there is a path leading out of the place over the back of the cliffs. It sounds lovely and unspoilt. I'd be interested in doing some more walks on Crete, so I'll look out for the author you mention Anthony. I'd also like to scale Mount Ida, popping into the cave where Zeus was born on the way up!.

The problem with Greece is that of a country so widespread - there is so much for Gail and I to see, so many walks for us to do ......... but so little time available.
But I have to say that with all these walks mentioned ( and others we have done) the friendliness and hospitality is second to none ( and you only need basically "hello" in Greek to break the ice) .
That really is the hidden (i.e., not in package holiday brochures) joy of Greece ! We're still trying to make Amorgos and the walk to "that" monastary ! maybe a year or two !

I can remember 30 years ago with perfect clarity ....... 30 hours, I don't think so
