Perfect walking conditions on Symi at the moment - not too hot, no rain and still some wildflowers to be seen.

Walkers have reported several tortoise sightings and the herpetological population is also starting to wake up.

The secret to survival is a well developed sense of the ridiculous.

Nice to hear about the tortoises, not so sure about the Hissing Sids - although the only snakes I've ever seen were fortunately very dead!

Some time since I've seen a live tortoise; but some time since I've been on Symi in the spring. I have a tiny shell no more than 4cm long which I picked up in the area near George's farm as-was (beneath Stavrou tou Polemou) a couple of Septembers ago - one little baby which never made it to adulthood. As for the Hissers - whenever we've seen them they disappear pretty quickly. A case of mutual agreement.

According to Matt, our friendly herpetologist, it is best to let sleeping snakes lie...

We get quite a few tortoises on the Somerset levels. This one is about 1 metre long. Handsome beast, isn't he? Reminds me of someone.
